# Crop Steering > Crop Steering waters each zone of a grow room from what its probes read, inside Home Assistant. If a reading or switch looks wrong it stops watering and alerts you, and it logs every watering. Crop Steering is free, open-source software (MIT licence) for Home Assistant 2024.10.0 or newer. It has two parts with one version number: an integration, installed with HACS, that keeps rooms, zones, settings, plans and history and adds a dashboard to the sidebar; and a controller, installed from the Home Assistant app store or run in Docker, that reads the probes each minute, decides each shot and operates the pump and valves with safety checks. It can use probes, valves and pumps that Home Assistant shows as an entity of a supported type and unit; not every device has been tested, and slow-reporting switches can still cause holds. Current release: 3.18.1 (2026-10-28). No cloud service is needed to water; an optional AI assistant uses the user's own API key. ## Start - [How crop steering works in Home Assistant](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/how-it-works.md): the two parts, a grow-day in four phases, one shot from reading to record - [Is Crop Steering right for your grow?](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/is-it-for-me.md): fit check and scope - [Sensors, pumps and valves that work](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/hardware.md): required and optional hardware, accepted entity types and units, limits - [Irrigation safety features](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/safety.md): fail-closed design, checks before every shot, read-back, AI limits - [Get started with Crop Steering](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/get-started.md): try, plan, install - [Install Crop Steering in Home Assistant](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/install.md): the install steps, the guided links and the requirements - [Install, upgrade and roll back](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/install.md): every install section in full - [First-run setup](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/first-run.md): after the install, the checks before the first watering - [System map: devices to Home Assistant](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/system-map.md): devices → Home Assistant → Crop Steering → people, with safety boundaries - [Crop steering and Home Assistant FAQ](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/faq.md): direct answers ## Docs - [Crop Steering Academy](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/academy.md): The free Crop Steering Academy: beginner video lessons from water and roots to daily operation, the learning routes and how each lesson works. - [Learner workbook](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/workbook.md): The Academy's learner workbook: glossary, calculations, graph exercises, setup record, daily routine and explained answers. - [Validated feature matrix](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/feature-matrix.md): Every feature with how it was tested, the evidence behind it and its limits, and what has and has not been verified on a live installation. - [Current workspace screenshots](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/screenshots.md): Current screenshots of the main pages, from all-rooms status and a phone view to tank, dosing, irrigation and history, captured with demo data. - [Equipment and setup: start with one zone](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/equipment-and-setup.md): Equipment and setup for one zone: functional kit, compatibility sheet, water and control paths, and staged commissioning. - [Water supply, pump queue and flow checks](https://cropsteering.growlabs.nz/docs/water-supply.md): Pump flow and sharing, the pump queue and flow-meter checks.
